COVID-19 Guidance for the SCI Community – 2020/03/19

People living with SCI often have breathing difficulties and/or impaired lung function. This information sheet has been prepared to help you know what to do during this phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Prevention

  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and warm water for 20-30 seconds
  • Stay home except to get medical care
  • Call your doctor before you visit to let them know you feel unwell and explain any other health concerns
  • Regularly clean all surfaces that you touch every day, including your phone and wheelchair parts (pushrims, joystick, armrests, brakes, tray, etc)
  • Prepare an emergency kit (a guide is available on our website at ca)

●      Keep on hand a cache of medical supplies to last a minimum of 30 days (catheters, gloves, lubricant, dressing supplies), as well as medications

 

Attendant Care

  • Ask all attendants to wash their hands thoroughly when they arrive, before and after they provide care, and before leaving
  • If an attendant is feeling unwell, you have the right to send them home but be aware that an alternate attendant may not be available
  • Have a back-up plan if your attendant is ill or does not show up
  • Be sure to wash your own hands after all care

If you are Sick, or think you might have COVID-19

  • Isolate yourself at home if you develop respiratory symptoms
  • Call your local public health authority for advice

If you use a ventilator, CPAP, or cough assist device

  • Speak to your health care provider or respiratory therapist regarding what precautions you, your family and attendants should take in your home
  • Regularly clean your equipment and replace filters per your device manual
  • Ensure you have an adequate supply of filters and tubing

On July 17, 2020, the Government of Canada announced a one-time $600 payment in recognition of the extraordinary expenses faced by persons with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This payment of up to $600 will be automatically issued to persons with disabilities. Payments are expected to be issued beginning this Fall.
